Abstract

Political dynamics between South Korea and North Korea is caused by differences in ideology: South Korea adheres to liberal democracy, while North Korea follows Juche ideology. The political policies of both countries agree on this situation. South Korea cooperates with the United States and Japan in military exercises that have a negative impact on the environment, while North Korea focuses on developing nuclear weapons, which increases political tensions and also has a negative impact on the Korean Peninsula's environment. This research aims to understand how political dynamics between South Korea and North Korea affects the environment on the Korean Peninsula. This research uses a qualitative approach with case studies and analyzes this situation through the concept of political dynamics and environmental security theory. The results show that this dynamics is caused by the political policies of both countries: North Korea which continues to test nuclear weapons and South Korea which continues to conduct military exercises with the US and Japan. The impacts include environmental degradation, greenhouse gas emissions, forest destruction, soil air pollution, decreased agricultural yields, population displacement, and damage to marine and land ecosystems.
