RED VELVET SEBAGAI AGEN DIPLOMASI BUDAYA KOREA SELATAN DI KOREA UTARA TAHUN 2018
Abstract

ABSTRACT
This study aims to analyze the role of the K-Pop idol group Red Velvet as an agent of South Korea’s cultural diplomacy in the context of inter-Korean relations in 2018. The research is based on the historic moment of Red Velvet’s performance at the “Spring is Coming” concert in Pyongyang, which served as part of a broader effort to promote cultural exchange between North and South Korea. Using a qualitative method and literature study approach, the research applies the theoretical frameworks of cultural diplomacy and citizen diplomacy to examine how K-Pop can function as a diplomatic tool. The findings reveal that Red Velvet’s performance positively contributed to enhancing South Korea’s image, stimulating North Korean interest in K-Pop, and fostering opportunities for cross-border cultural cooperation. The study concludes that cultural diplomacy through K-Pop, conducted by non-state actors like Red Velvet, can serve as a strategic instrument for building more open, inclusive, and peaceful international relations—particularly within politically sensitive regions such as the Korean Peninsula.
